Mozilla plans to further intensify the low-budget smartphone war in India with its smartphone. According to a report by WSJ (paywall), the company plans to launch the Firefox OS based smartphones priced as low as Rs 1,500/- in the Indian market.

Mozilla has partnered with Intex and Spice, two of India’s leading mobile device brands, to bring the first Firefox OS devices to India in the next few months.
“Mozilla is dedicated to putting the power of the web in people’s hands, and Firefox OS frees consumers, developers, mobile providers and manufacturers from the limitations and restrictions of proprietary platforms,” Mozilla Chief Operating Officer Li Gong said in a statement.
The Mozilla OS had made its debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, targeting developing countries including India and China. And with signing up of popular local mobile sellers Intex and Spice to market this device in India Mozilla seems to be living up to its commitment

Commenting on this association Intex Technologies Business Head (Mobile) Sanjay Kumar Kalirona said“The platform will give us an edge in upgrading buyers from feature phones to smartphones while making it affordable for the mass market. This will propel our devices to be much more than a way to use the web, but take the engagement further and develop the web as a mobile platform”
Dilip Modi, Co-Founder & CEO of Spice, said, "We have been the technology innovators in India's telecom industry and are pleased to introduce Firefox OS in India through our smartphones to cater to the country's masses. This partnership with Mozilla showcases our commitment to providing the best technological innovations first-hand to our customers. We have high expectations from this partnership as we continue to constantly push the boundaries, and bring unique and exciting products to our customers. These phones will be affordably priced to ensure everyone can enjoy and experience the power of the Firefox OS phone."
This indeed seems to be a great way to enter markets like India and China where price still plays a great deciding factor when people decide to get a new phone. And with Peer pressure high on almost everyone having a "touchscreen Smartphone" Mozilla seems to have hit the nail in the head with its pricing strategy.
